Shielded, yet un armored

🎼🎵🎶 “You say”- Lauren Daigle

Can softness or kindness ever really be the problem?

“You need to grow a thicker skin.”

“You’re too soft.”

“You need to toughen up.”

How many times haven’t I heard that?

And every single time it felt as if something was wrong with me. As if being soft was a flaw that needed fixing.

The world sometimes seems to demand armor. But my heart chooses differently.

I don’t actually want to become harder. I wouldn’t even know how.

Why become someone other than your true nature, just to protect yourself?

Are we supposed to let go of our belief in the goodness of humanity and start from distrust instead of trust? Always on guard?

That doesn’t feel like a solution to me.

That feels like loss.

No… I refuse to grow a thicker skin

just because the world can have sharp edges.

I said that recently to someone I care about deeply.

And I also admitted that I do find it difficult sometimes.

His answer:

“Then let me be your shield.” ♥️

And suddenly… it made perfect sense.

That I hadn’t thought of that before 🙃

Maybe the answer isn’t in becoming harder,

but in surrounding yourself with a circle of people who can form a shield around you.

People who don’t try to correct your softness, but help protect it.

And it made me realize too that from now on, I will hear “too soft” or “too kind” as a compliment — no longer as if I am the problem.

Because why harden your heart,

when you can also wrap it in people who understand that softness is strength, not weakness.
