🎶 The Civil Wars- “Poison and wine”
I sometimes feel small. Less. Of little worth.
And I suspect I’m not the only one.
You may recognise what it feels like
to make yourself smaller so as not to lose the other.
Or to never want to be more than the other is used to.
And certainly never too much.
That feeling of too, by the way — too sensitive, too open, too vulnerable… does that sound familiar?
It undoubtedly plays a role in that deep urge to go very far, to give almost everything, just to find a little connection.
Bending. Being flexible.
And if necessary, even leaving myself behind
to create closeness.
I have become a master at it.
At disappearing while I stayed.
Being more accommodating.
More agreeable. More flexible.
Shaping myself to fit the other(s),
in the hope of being seen and loved.
Swallowing words, dimming my light, shrinking my space…
and, above all, enlarging the space of others.
Not because anyone ever said it had to be this way,
but because leaving myself behind seemed to make the search for love and connection easier.
But you cannot keep shrinking endlessly without disappearing.
And what you then receive is neither love, nor real connection.
There is nothing wrong with longing for closeness.
But you do not have to let go of your own heart
to please that of others.
Because love does not need you at your smallest.
It sees you standing there,
even when you do not move.
It hears words
you do not even speak.
It is unconditional and consistent.
Not dependent on the moment.
It finds you without searching.
It creates a path where hearts can meet.
In mutual greatness.
Full of — and with — one another.
