Dubai — a pinnacle of human capability.
Here, we are taught that almost everything is makeable.
They don’t only dream here while asleep, I was told.
Everything is big.
Tall.
Shiny.
Perfectly aligned.
Awe, everywhere.
And then there is warmth, of course.
From the sun, at least.
The warmth of chance encounters — crossing glances, a smile, words, attentive presence — without purpose, non-functional, and therefore deeply connecting — feels a little less tangible.
A pity, really, because human connection does not grow out of steel, concrete, or glass.
I came here with the greatest curiosity.
And with something I already knew would be my conclusion: that both–and is almost always a good idea.
We have much to learn from one another, in every direction.
Of course, as a passing tourist, I have no real authority to pass judgment.
But it is impossible to deny how little is left to chance here.
The speed and efficiency with which deserts are transformed into a paradise of consumerism is astonishing.
“That’s simply the law of supply and demand,” I heard someone say…
But is it really?
Is this truly what we, as humans, are asking for?
That is where I find myself struggling a little.
And yet — the idea that everything is makeable, that you can build your dreams while awake…
I love that.
Truly.
That is something I can wholeheartedly embrace.
So perhaps the greater ambition could be gently recalibrated.
Toward creating a perfect balance between human capability and human being.
An equilibrium between vertical ambition and horizontal closeness.
How elegant would that be ❣️
There are, of course, tensions between human doing and human being.
Between vertical ambition and horizontal connection.
Bridging that gap would require an extraordinary level of creativity and ingenuity.
Reconciling speed with space to slow down.
Connection for creation with connection that expects nothing in return.
Perfection with authenticity.
Grandeur with closeness.
Intellectual calculation with heartfelt attunement.
Not Only More — Also Closer
Not only higher, faster, more.
But also closer, over time, deeper.
Not only perfection.
But also sincere attention and care.
Not only the mind.
But also the heart.
Not only investing in business, buildings, and money.
But also in one another, in relationships —
and with our hearts.
